The Golden Fleece is the mythical fleece that was given to King Augeas, the shepherd king of Elis, by its owner Phryxus. When Augeas tried to steal it, his own daughter, Chryseis, told her father that Jason had sent her to collect the fleece. Her father, afraid of losing his daughter if he didn't give up the fleece, gave it up. Jason then gave the fleece to his friend Aeson, who went on to become king of Iolcus after killing Augeas in battle.

The Golden Fleece became a symbol of kingship and remained in the possession of the kings of Elis for over 500 years. The fleece's final owner was Krysomallos, who was killed by King Pelias after he stole it back from Jason.
